If you want to be a good paintball player, you should have the ability to spot your opponents immediately before they get a chance to spot you. This means that the type of mask you choose will be very important.
The referee won't allow you to enter the playing field if you don't have a mask. The mask will serve as your face's protection. It shields your eyes from the splat of the paint.
You have to ensure that your mask is of good quality. It should not affect your vision and most especially, the mask shouldn't fog up.
Fogging is a real problem with a single-pane lens. Most cheap paintball masks use this type of lens. Even if the manufacturer claims that the mask has fog protection, it will only work on the first two games but on the succeeding games, your mask will definitely fog up and start to hinder your vision.
